PAINTING AT EVERGREEN SCHOOL

Many years ago, a few of my nieces attended Evergreen Elementary School in Saint-Lazare, Quebec. Two of my grandchildren are currently students there, and four others went there before high school. So, Evergreen is a very special place for my family.

About seven or eight years ago, I painted at the school with some of my grandchildren. We created two or three collective paintings, which now hang in the school. A few months ago, my grandson Zachary asked if I could go again. He had spoken to one of the teachers, who had been there at the time and later visited our gallery. Of course, the answer was yes!

 

So, on March 12th, Francine and I painted with three different kindergarten classes. It was a lot of fun, made even more special because Assistant #1 was Zachary, who is now 12 years old.

Each child created their own 12” x 9” painting and then contributed to a larger 48” x 36” canvas. I have to say, the kids were amazing—well-behaved and so talented! Picasso once said it took him four years to learn to paint like Raphael and a lifetime to paint like a child. These five- and six-year-olds proved him right!

 

 One of the most remarkable things about the day was discovering that Isabelle, the teacher who organized it all, had taught my niece over 25 years ago. She has been at the school for 32 years! Her energy and enthusiasm for the kids were evident. I’m truly grateful to Isabelle and her colleagues for all they have done for my family over the years.

PEINTURE À L'ÉCOLE EVERGREEN

Il y a de nombreuses années, quelques-unes de mes nièces fréquentaient l'école primaire Evergreen à Saint-Lazare, au Québec. Deux de mes petits-enfants y sont actuellement scolarisés, et quatre autres y ont fréquenté avant le secondaire. Evergreen est donc un endroit très spécial pour ma famille.

Il y a sept ou huit ans, j'ai peint à l'école avec certains de mes petits-enfants. Nous avons créé deux ou trois tableaux collectifs, qui sont maintenant exposés dans l'école. Il y a quelques mois, mon petit-fils Zachary m'a demandé si je pouvais y retourner. Il avait parlé à l'un des enseignants, qui était présent à l'époque et qui a ensuite visité notre galerie. Bien sûr, la réponse était oui !

 

Le 12 mars, Francine et moi avons peint avec trois classes de maternelle différentes. C'était très amusant, d'autant plus spécial que l'assistant n° 1 était Zachary, qui a maintenant 12 ans.

 

Chaque enfant a créé sa propre peinture de 30 cm x 23 cm, puis a contribué à une toile plus grande de 122 cm x 91 cm. Je dois dire que les enfants étaient formidables : sages et tellement talentueux ! Picasso a dit un jour qu’il lui avait fallu quatre ans pour apprendre à peindre comme Raphaël et toute une vie pour peindre comme un enfant. Ces enfants de cinq et six ans lui ont donné raison !

 

L’un des moments les plus marquants de cette journée a été de découvrir qu’Isabelle, l’institutrice qui a tout organisé, avait enseigné à ma nièce il y a plus de 25 ans. Elle est à l’école depuis 32 ans ! Son énergie et son enthousiasme pour les enfants étaient évidents. Je suis sincèrement reconnaissante à Isabelle et à ses collègues pour tout ce qu’ils ont fait pour ma famille au fil des ans.
