NOW OPEN FOR COMMISSIONS!

Over the last 12 years at the gallery, I have often been asked to do commissions.  Most of the time I said “no”, because I thought commissions were a source of stress and the reason I first started painting in the first place was to relieve stress!

When I did do the odd commission, I made sure to say there was no obligation to purchase the painting for two reasons… the most important being I wanted the recipient to be 100% happy with the work and secondly, if they weren’t, I knew I could probably sell it in my gallery. 

I didn’t have a gallery when I did my first custom painting.  It was in the early 2000s.  A neighbor had recently returned from his ancestral village in Ireland and asked me to do a painting.  He gave me a number of photos to choose from and left it up to me to decide which one I would paint.  We agreed on a price.  But I had never sold a painting and didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself so I ended up painting three of the photos and giving them to the fellow for the agreed upon price.  I figured if he didn’t like the quality at least he’d like the quantity.

However today, I have started saying “yes” to commissions.  This often makes for wonderful gifts! However, the same rule applies… there is no obligation to purchase the painting. This makes for wonderful gifts!

Au cours des 12 dernières années passées à la galerie, on m'a souvent demandé de réaliser des peintures sur mesure. La plupart du temps, j'ai refusé, car je considérais cette approche comme étant une source de stress, alors que j'avais commencé à peindre précisément pour évacuer ce stress !

Lorsque j'acceptais une commande, je m'assurais de préciser qu'il n'y avait aucune obligation d'acheter le tableau, et ce pour deux raisons... La plus importante étant que je voulais que le client soit satisfait à 100 % de l'œuvre et, deuxièmement, que s'il ne l'était pas, je savais que je pourrais probablement la vendre dans ma galerie.

Je n'avais pas de galerie lorsque j'ai réalisé ma première oeuvre sur commande. C'était au début des années 2000. Un voisin venait de rentrer de son village ancestral en Irlande et m'avait demandé de réaliser une peinture. Il m'avait donné plusieurs photos parmi lesquelles choisir et m'avait laissé le soin de décider laquelle m’inspirait. Nous nous étions mis d'accord sur un prix mais je n'avais jamais vendu de tableau. Comme je n'avais pas beaucoup confiance en moi, j'ai fini par peindre trois des photos. Je me suis dit que s'il n'aimait pas la qualité, il apprécierait au moins la quantité.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai commencé à accepter des commandes. Cela fait souvent de merveilleux cadeaux! Cependant, la même règle s'applique : il n'y a aucune obligation d'acheter le tableau.

August, 2025 GOODBYE MY OLD PORT GALLERY FRIENDS & THANK YOU ALL! Dear friends, This post is a bit late… it short of got lost in the move but better late than never!!!  LOL! Francine and I have met so many wonderful people since we  opened our gallery 12 years ago at 367 Rue St-Paul Est. As we prepare to move to 49A Donegani in Pointe-Claire, we want to express our deep appreciation to some of the incredible individuals who helped make our time in Old Montreal such a success. First, a huge shoutout to FARD, our landlord, owned by Fred Shahrabani and his family. Fred has been the best landlord I’ve encountered in my 47 years with Rideau and during our 12 years on St-Paul. He, along with his siblings Danny and Rosie, supported us through St-Paul’s road closures, COVID, and so many other challenges. WE ARE MOVING! - NOUS DÉMÉNAGEONS!

  English Version - *version française dessous*      WE ARE MOVING!     It is with much excitement that I’m pleased to announce we will be moving our gallery and my studio from 367 Rue St-Paul Est in the Old Port of Montreal to 49A Donegani in Pointe-Claire .   Francine and I opened our gallery on May 18th, 2013 . It was meant to be a five-month pop-up, with plans to close at the end of October. Our goal was to sell 50 paintings by then—but we reached that milestone by the end of June ! By the end of the summer, Francine and I decided to keep the gallery open for at least one year. That one year turned into twelve beautiful years !   Since then, we’ve sold nearly 2,300 paintings to over 1,800 collectors in more than 30 countries around the world!   Of course, our twelve years on St-Paul came with some real adventures and challenges.
