EVERYDAY I WAKE UP TO MONET!

 


Monet’s paintings have always moved me. He, along with Degas, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Paul Riopelle and of course, Vincent Van Gogh really influenced my art.  

 

I used to copy Monet when I started painting 35 years ago in 1989 and visited many museums with Francine just to see his art.  Our very first trip was to see the Monet series paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Art in 1990.  His paintings took my breath away and I could have stayed there for hours.

 

Many years ago, I was given a Monet placemat setting for my birthday.  It consisted of six placemats and coasters featuring famous Monet paintings.  By that time, I had seen most of the paintings in person.  We never really used the set and for years, it sat in a drawer.  About six months ago I was looking for something and stumbled upon them.  The paintings brought back happy memories of my early painting days and I decided to use some of them on my nightstand.

 

So everyday, I wake up to Monet!  His paintings never get old and make a great start to my day.

Les peintures de Monet m’ont toujours ému. Lui, ainsi que Degas, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Paul Riopelle et bien sûr Vincent Van Gogh, ont vraiment influencé mon art.


J’avais l’habitude de copier Monet lorsque j’ai commencé à peindre il y a 35 ans en 1989 et j’ai visité de nombreux musées avec Francine juste pour voir son art. Notre tout premier voyage a été pour voir la série de peintures de Monet au Boston Museum of Fine Art en 1990. Ses peintures m’ont coupé le souffle et j’aurais pu y rester des heures.

 

Il y a de nombreuses années, on m’a offert un set de table Monet pour mon anniversaire. Il se composait de six sets de table et de sous-verres représentant des peintures célèbres de Monet. À cette époque, j’avais vu la plupart des peintures en personne. Nous n’avons jamais vraiment utilisé le set et pendant des années, il est resté dans un tiroir. Il y a environ six mois, je cherchais quelque chose et je suis tombé dessus. Les peintures m’ont rappelé de bons souvenirs de mes premiers jours de peinture et j’ai décidé de finalement utiliser le set sur ma table de nuit.

 

Alors, tous les jours, je me réveille avec Monet ! Ses peintures ne vieillissent jamais et me permettent de bien commencer la journée.

WHY SUNFLOWERS ? - POURQUOI DES TOURNESOLS?

  English Version - *version française dessous* WHY SUNFLOWERS? My Mom really loved sunflowers!  Sadly, she passed away from cancer in 2000.  Every time I paint sunflowers, I think of her, and her memory make me happy.  I believe a bit of Mom’s soul is in each of my sunflower paintings. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing Mom is getting to places she never visited in her lifetime.  This is one of the main reasons I paint sunflowers! Did you know that even on cloudy days the face of the sunflower follows the trajectory of the sun? To me, this is a message of hope… even if I’m having a bad day, the sun is just behind the clouds and tomorrow will be a better day. PHOTO: TOURNESOLS – details by Peter W. WORKING IN A FACTORY - TRAVAILLER DANS UNE USINE

  English Version - *version française dessous* WORKING IN A FACTORY I would never paint the way I do if I had not worked in my parents’ jewellery factory.  When I got out of high school, I went into my family’s jewellery business as did Cam Ferguson and eventually all my siblings.   My parents insisted that we work in the factory and learn every job from the ground up. They encouraged us to innovate and not be afraid to get our hands dirty. This included sweeping the factory floor and working on every machine.  We worked for people who cared about what they did and what they made.  They taught us lessons that we carried through our lives and gave us a solid base in understanding how things were made.   It also taught us that every tool and machine had its proper place in the factory.  I have carried this over into my studio.  Although I’m a very messy painter, at the end of the day I always put everything way.  Visitors often remark how tidy my studio looks.  It’s all becaus
