WE TRY HARDER!

 

Every year, The Suburban newspaper runs its Best of Montreal competition, covering a variety of categories, including art galleries. Participants enter the competition, and the public votes to determine the top three winners in each category.

 

In 2022, we were honored to be voted the best art gallery in Montreal. For some reason, we didn’t enter the 2023 competition, but we were back in for 2024.

 

I’m proud to announce that we finished 2nd overall this year! A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us—I truly appreciate your support. I also want to express my gratitude to my wife, Francine, and her talented team, who always do their best to make every visitor feel welcome, whether they acquire a painting or not.

 

Congratulations as well to Heffel Gallery for taking first place and Avenue Gallery for securing third!

 

Avis once had the famous slogan, “We Try Harder.” So, for next year’s competition, I guess we’ll be doing the same—LOL!

Chaque année, le journal The Suburban organise son concours Best of Montreal, couvrant diverses catégories, y compris les galeries d'art. Les participants participent au concours et le public vote pour déterminer les trois premiers gagnants de chaque catégorie.

 

En 2022, nous avons eu l’honneur d’être élus meilleure galerie d’art de Montréal. Pour une raison quelconque, nous n’avons pas participé au concours de 2023, mais nous étions de retour pour 2024.

 

Je suis fier d’annoncer que nous avons terminé 2e au classement général cette année ! Un immense merci à tous ceux qui ont pris le temps de voter pour nous – j’apprécie vraiment votre soutien. Je tiens également à exprimer ma gratitude à ma femme, Francine, et à sa talentueuse équipe, qui font toujours de leur mieux pour que chaque visiteur se sente le bienvenu, qu’il acquière un tableau ou non.

 

Félicitations également à la Galerie Heffel pour avoir remporté la première place et à la Galerie Avenue pour avoir obtenu la troisième place !

 

Avis avait autrefois le célèbre slogan « Nous essayons plus fort ». Alors, pour le concours de l’année prochaine, je suppose que nous ferons la même chose – MDR !

In 1943, he met and married my British Mother. After the war, they started with very little. Dad worked as a courier for a jewelry company and Mom worked part time as a bookkeeper… all while raising four young children. In 1958, they bought a small jewelry company.   English Version - *version française dessous*    LATE BEGINNINGS My first wife bought me a paint set for Christmas in 1988.   It was a beginners set for oil painting and had a small 5" x 7" canvas along with an instruction booklet on how to paint several different images.     In the spring of 1989, I tried it out.   Because I have kept a daily diary since the age of 23, I know the exact date.   It was Sunday, April 16 th , 1989.   I choose a winter farm scene and carefully followed the instructions.   To be frank, it was almost like “paint-by-numbers” but without the lines and numbers!   After about five hours of effort, I told myself "nice try... Don't quit your day time job!"   At that point in time, I had no intention of continuing and put the painting and the set on a shelf in my garage. I literally forgot about it for about three weeks. MY EARLIEST PAINTING - MA PREMIÈRE PEINTURE

English Version - *version française dessous*  MY EARLIEST PAINTING I have no recollection of my first painting efforts.   Nevertheless, I was told about it many times as I grew up.   My parents moved into a duplex on Patricia Avenue in NDG, a suburb of Montreal two weeks before I was born.   My Grandfather and my Uncle Bob lived on the first floor and we lived above them.   I was the first of four kids.   Apparently, if I had been a girl, my parents were going to name me “Patricia” after the street.   PHOTO/S: ROSANNE, STEPHEN & ME WITH GRANDPA   Both Mom and Dad worked.   During the day, Grandpa and Uncle Bob took care of me and in the summer they used to put me in backyard so I would not wake up my newly arrived siblings, Rosanne and Stephen, twins who arrived two years after me followed by my youngest brother Robby, a year after the twins.     According to f...
