MY STUDIO

Four years ago today, my best friend Cam Ferguson helped Francine and me move my studio to the space directly behind our art gallery on 367 Rue St-Paul in the Old Port of Montreal. My studio had been located at Rideau, where I had worked for most of my adult life.

 

At the end of the day, Cam and I walked out of Rideau together for the very last time. It was very fitting because we had both worked there since 1972. So it was a very emotional day for both of us. I’m truly grateful for the 48 years I worked in that building. Yes, there were difficult times, but overall, there were many, many more good times. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the amazing people I worked with during my career at Rideau. Together, we created a very special company. Cam passed away last year, but his spirit is always with me when I paint.

MON ATELIER

Il y a quatre ans aujourd'hui, mon meilleur ami Cam Ferguson nous a aidés, Francine et moi, à déménager mon studio directement derrière notre galerie d'art au 367 rue St-Paul dans le Vieux-Port de Montréal. Mon studio était situé à Rideau, où j'ai travaillé pendant la majeure partie de ma vie adulte.

 

À la fin de la journée, Cam et moi sommes sortis ensemble de Rideau pour la toute dernière fois. C'était très approprié car nous y travaillions tous les deux depuis 1972. Ce fut donc une journée très émouvante pour nous deux. Je suis vraiment reconnaissant pour les 48 années où j’ai travaillé dans ce bâtiment. Oui, il y a eu des moments difficiles, mais dans l’ensemble, il y a eu beaucoup plus de bons moments. Je m’en voudrais de ne pas mentionner les personnes formidables avec qui j’ai travaillé au cours de ma carrière chez Rideau. Ensemble, nous avons créé une entreprise très spéciale. Cam est décédé l'année dernière, mais son esprit est toujours avec moi lorsque je peins.

WHY SUNFLOWERS ? - POURQUOI DES TOURNESOLS?

  English Version - *version française dessous* WHY SUNFLOWERS? My Mom really loved sunflowers!  Sadly, she passed away from cancer in 2000.  Every time I paint sunflowers, I think of her, and her memory make me happy.  I believe a bit of Mom’s soul is in each of my sunflower paintings. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing Mom is getting to places she never visited in her lifetime.  This is one of the main reasons I paint sunflowers! Did you know that even on cloudy days the face of the sunflower follows the trajectory of the sun? To me, this is a message of hope… even if I’m having a bad day, the sun is just behind the clouds and tomorrow will be a better day. PHOTO: TOURNESOLS – details by Peter W. WORKING IN A FACTORY - TRAVAILLER DANS UNE USINE

  English Version - *version française dessous* WORKING IN A FACTORY I would never paint the way I do if I had not worked in my parents’ jewellery factory.  When I got out of high school, I went into my family’s jewellery business as did Cam Ferguson and eventually all my siblings.   My parents insisted that we work in the factory and learn every job from the ground up. They encouraged us to innovate and not be afraid to get our hands dirty. This included sweeping the factory floor and working on every machine.  We worked for people who cared about what they did and what they made.  They taught us lessons that we carried through our lives and gave us a solid base in understanding how things were made.   It also taught us that every tool and machine had its proper place in the factory.  I have carried this over into my studio.  Although I’m a very messy painter, at the end of the day I always put everything way.  Visitors often remark how tidy my studio looks.  It’s all becaus
